Teaching Elementary Literacy
Electronic Portfolio Page: Grade 1
For my Teaching Primary Literacy class, I attended Central Elementary School to assist in a first grade classroom. The field experience was five weeks long for a total of one hour per week. During my time at Central, I worked with a cooperating teacher to help students, read aloud, and create a full class lesson. The class did many centers while I was assisting. Centers focused on different elements of phonics such as blends and inflected endings. While I am a middle level major, it was a great learning experience to be in a first grade classroom. I was exposed to different learning styles and learned effective techniques in behavior management.
In the picture to the left, I was reading a picture book related to Halloween. The students really enjoyed it! The book had a clear pattern, so by the end of the book, we were “reading” aloud together. I read with prosody and expression so that students would be interested and more inclined to pay attention.
Pictured to the right, is a bingo game I played with students to practice blends. My cooperating teacher had laminated bingo cards with different blends such as “bl”, “sn”, and “sk." She also had small laminated cards with pictures to correspond with the blends. I held up the pictures and students would have to decide what blend it had. She gave me little Halloween erasers to use as bingo chips and students were very excited about this.
In the picture to the left, the students and I read a story from their basil readers. Each student read a page so all group members were able to participate. They enjoyed the story and read with mostly accuracy.
