Component 3d:
Using Assessment in Instruction
What is Component 3d?
Component 3d involves a variety of methods of assessing students. Assessment can take place during or after a lesson and does not always have to be for a grade. While graded assessment is important, ungraded testing is also just as vital. Assessment in which students are not graded often comes in the form of formative assessment and takes place during the lesson. Teachers can gain a lot of knowledge through formative assessment because it allows them to see where their students understanding currently lies. On the other hand, summative assessment is often attached to a grade and occurs after the lesson is provided.
Why is Component 3d important?
It is vital that teachers use various forms of assessment in their classrooms so that they can track student progress. Formative assessment in the form of questions, exit slips, or in-class activities can be used by teachers to note student comprehension. Having knowledge of their students' understanding allows teachers to make changes to content or pace of future lessons. Summative assessment in the form of tests, quizzes, and end-of-unit projects can be used by teachers to test their students' abilities. After spending time on a lesson, it is important that teachers ensure their students understood the content and earn a corresponding grade.
Elements
The first element within Component 3d is assessment criteria. It is important that students are aware of what is expected of them during an assessment. Teachers can help students understand expectations by eluding to common themes or ideas during each lesson. The second element is monitoring of student learning. Teachers must be able to use a variety of techniques to assess students by planning it into a lesson. By using several teaching strategies, teachers can meet the needs of each student despite differences in learning styles. Teachers must also provide feedback to students. Giving constructive criticism after assessments is key to student success. If feedback is given effectively and in a timely manner, students will be able to make changes to how they will approach future activities and assessments. Lastly, teachers must allow students time for self-assessment and monitoring of progress. It is important that students have the ability to critique their own work based on their performance. By making personal reflections, students can be more independent and carry this skill with them throughout the remainder of their schooling.
Possible Artifacts
Providing tests and quizzes
Providing rubrics as proof of instructional assessment
A list of past activities that have involved formative assessment
