Component 4c:
Communicating with families
What is Component 4c?
This Component stresses the importance of keeping open communication with a student's family members. It is vital that teachers have an understanding of each student's family background so that they can relate to and assist them in their struggles. Furthermore, by involving family members, parents will see the importance of education and its effect on their child's life.
Why is Compoent 4c important?
Teachers need to be aware of Component 4c so that they can effectively communicate with parents. As a child ages, it becomes increasing important that parents remain a part of their academic lives. Parents should be aware of their child's progress and lack of understanding so that they can assist them at home. Parents should also be made aware of issues that arise in the classroom so that they can address them.
Elements
The first element of Component 4c is for teachers to provide families with information about the instructional program. By giving parents informaiton that is appropriate, meaningful, and timely, teachers can insure they understand their child's expectations. Secondly, teachers should provide parents with information about individual students. When reporting classroom occurrances, teachers must be sensitive to the family culture and dynamic when it comes to communication. Lastly, teachers should focus on engaging families in the instructional program. By encouraging parents to be a part of the learning process, teachers provide the opportunity for families to come along side of and assist their student.
Possible Artifacts
