Poverty Infographic
Artifact Description
What is the artifact?
I created an inforgraphic on poverty for my Foundations of Teaching class. For the project, I had to research information on the poorest county in my state (Pennsylvania). Then, I found inforation on the poorest school district in that county. Lastly, I researched the wealthiest school distrcit and compared characteristics. I created an infographic using Canva for this project and was able to organize facts into a visually appealing format. Canva allowed me to input quick pieces of information into an infographic and format it in an organized way.
How does it fit into Danielson framework of teaching and the component identified?
Using Canva to create an infographic on poverty relates to Domain 2: The Classroom. By organizing information on poverty, I was able to learn more about its effect on students. The infographic further fits into Component 2a which discusses creating an environment of respect and rapport. Creating an infographic on poverty allowed me to understand how a lack of money and necessities impacts students. If students are living in poverty and do not have money for supplies and sources that would aid them in their education, it becomes difficult for them to complete assignments. Thus, it is important for teachers to understand the effects of poverty on students' academic and personal lives.
Artifact Reflection
What would you do differently and what did you enjoy about creating the artifact?
If I were to do the project again, I would research more information on the specific effects of poverty on classroom culture. Through my research, I learned that poverty greatly affects the materials and resources that a school can provide. However, how does poverty change the classroom dynamic and the way in which students interact? On a differnt note, I greatly enjoyed creating the inforgraphic as it provided me with an opportunity to learn more about an unfamilar subject. I find it intereting that often times the most impoverished schools do not have poor test scores.
How does this tool support pedagogy?
Creating an inforgraphic about poverty supports pedagogy because of its relevancy in the classroom. It is important for teachers to recognize poverty's effect on their students and cosider it when designing lessons and homework. Poverty's prevalance greatly impacts the work a teacher can assign, as it is unfair to make students responsible for work that they do not have the resources to use.
How can you use this artifact in your future classroom?
I can use a poverty inforgraphic to organize my thoughts and findings on poverty in my own district. It will be important for me as a teacher to determine the level of poverty in my own classroom so that I can meet the needs of each of my students.
