Kory Tellers
For my service learning project, I skyped a classroom in Minnesota with a partner, Heidi Hoffman. The project was called “Kory Tellers” and was organized through Kory Graham. Mrs. Graham is an innovations teacher for grades 1-5 at Byron Elementary School. For the project, my partner and I skyped one of her second grade classrooms and read them the children’s book, The Monsters’ Monster.
This activity demonstrates service learning because I took concepts that I learned in the classroom and applied them to a real classroom. I was able to help a teacher and students by teaching them real life lessons of gratitude. By participating in a service learning project I was able to connect with others in the community in order to help them reach a deeper level of understanding.
Service learning is the idea of taking concepts learned in the classroom and applying them to the real world. In college, I have learned the importance of using technology to benefit education. Thus, I used Skype as a form of technology to communicate with a classroom. By participating in a service learning project I was able to connect with others in the community in order to help them reach a deeper level of understanding.
I would consider doing an activity like this in my future classroom with a pre-service teacher because I believe it provides a great opportunity for teachers not already in the field to interact with a classroom. Also, by using a creative mode of communication such as Skype, pre-service teachers are able to learn professionalism. I believe that using this technology would greatly help teachers gain confidence.
The service learning project relates to Component 3c of the Danielson framework. By reading to a classroom, I demonstrated classroom instruction. Furthermore, the process relates to engaging students in learning because they were focused and concentrated throughout the lesson. As my partner and I read the story to the students they were engaged and interested, asking questions at the end.
