Component 1b:
Demonstrating Knowledge of Students
What is Component 1b?
In order to effectively implement Component 1b, knowledge of students, teachers must know their students both inside and outside of the classroom. An appreciation for students' lives can be demonstrated by taking an interest in their specific learning styles as well as their hobbies and passions outside of school.
Why is Component 1b important?
By knowing details about students, a teacher can begin to relate to their struggles and create lesson plans that suit their needs and understanding. For instance, if a student has a particular difficulty, a teacher can tailor lesson plans to meet the child where they currently are.
Elements
In order to be successful in knowing their students, teachers must have knowledge of child and adolescent development. By understanding the current states of their students' minds and bodies, teachers will be more successful in relating to their thoughts. Knowledge of the learning process is another requirement for reaching children where they are because it allows teachers to comprehend how their students learn best. Teachers must also attain knowledge of their students' skills, knowledge, & language proficiency by figuring out their current level of knowledge and increasing it from there. The concept of achieving full potential is also observed in the last element which is meeting students' special needs. In order to create a comfortable learning environment, each student must be considered when designing lesson plans.
Possible Artifacts
Professional journal in which notes on students' specific learning habits are recorded
Information on the sports and activities in which students are involved
Cultural aspects of students' lives that are relevant to the classroom
