Component 2a:
Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport
What is Component 2a?
Component 2a involves teachers creating a classroom that promotes efficiency and organization. By organizing an environment that is positive and encouraging, students will be better able to remain engaged in the lesson and retain information.
Why do we need to know about Component 2a?
It is important that teachers understand the component so that they can be sure to create a positive learning environment for their students. By forming relationships with their students, teachers will create a personal connection in which they can relate to personal problems and obstacles. By knowing students on a personal level, teachers will be able to pick up on misunderstandings even if they are not verbally asked. Thus, the classroom will run more smoothly if both teacher and student are on the same page.
Elements
There are two elements within Component 2a. The first element is teacher interaction with students. It is important that students have a sense of trust with the teacher. This can be accomplished by providing sensitive information to the teacher about his/her personal life when appropriate. Thus, students will form a bond with their teacher and will be more comfortable asking education related questions. The second element is student interaction with other students. It is vital that students respect each other in a genuine and positive manner. By communicating with one another respectfully, students will form bonds and will work more efficiently.
Possible Artifacts
Documenting aspects of other students' character that they enjoy
Creating a good behavior list recognizing positive behavior in the classroom
