Component 1a:
Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy
What is Component 1a?
In order to fulfill the requirements of Component 1a: Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy, teachers must have full understanding of their content area and how its elements relate to the real world. They must also be up-to-date with new information that emerges in order to maintain accuracy.
Why do we need to know about Component 1a?
The component is important because teachers must be able to instruct students based on precise and relevant information. Furthermore, by having full knowledge of content, teachers will be prepared to answer any questions that their students may ask.
Elements
The first element within the component is knowledge of content and the structure of the discipline. By understanding how certain aspects of each content area are related, teachers can make real world connections while still maintaining the lesson's structure. Secondly, teachers must understand the importance of having knowledge of prerequisite relationships. Some subjects involve prior understanding in order to exhibit mastery. Thus, teachers need to recognize these relationships. Lastly, knowledge of content related pedagogy is vital in order to have success in the classroom. Teachers must notice how their students are accepting the material and make adjustments to the lessons based to these behaviors.
Possible Artifacts
List of seminars or conferences attended throughout a teacher's career
Notes from a blog or magazine
List of past experiences and what was learned from individual classrooms
