Component 3b:
Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques
What is Component 3b?
In order for teachers to successfully provoke their students' thoughts, they must understand Component 3b. By executing the component, teachers will ask engaging questions and keep their students interested. Furthermore, by promoting stimulating discussion, children will learn new concepts and ideas more effectively.
Why is Component 3b important?
It is important that teachers apply Component 3b to their teaching so that students can remain engaged throughout the lesson. Furthermore, students will begin to formulate their own thoughts and opinions on certain matters if they are questioned appropriately. When students are forced to respond to a particular question, they must demonstrate communication skills, a vital aspect of becoming independent.
Elements
There are several elements that fall under Component 3b. First of all, teachers must realize the quality of questions and prompts so that they can provoke a variety of thinking from students. Secondly, teachers can focus on discussion techniques that will engage all learners. When conducting a classroom discussion, teachers must ensure that everyone is respected and has a voice. Lastly, teacher must make an effort to monitor student participation so that a few students do not dominate the discussion.
Possible Artifacts
Having a lesson plan which depicts different activities that encourage student participation
Document different types of formative assessment that can be used in the classroom
Look to Pinterest or other scholarly resources for advice and new ideas
