Component 3c:
Engaging Students in Learning
What is Component 3c?
Component 3c discusses the importance of involving students in lessons and activities so that they are constantly engaged. By forcing students to communicate with others and participate in activities, they will be more focused in class. Teachers can engage with students by having direct dialogue with them and asking thought-provoking questions.
Why is Component 3c important?
Teachers must always be aware of each student's level of focus in the classroom. By engaging students in stimulating conversation, teachers can ensure that their students are comprehending the content. When students are focused on material, they will be less likely to be off task and distracted. Furthermore, by talking with students, teachers can ask them if they are understanding the material and clear up any misconceptions.
Elements
The first element within the component is creating activities and assignments. Teachers should create activities that allow students to show what they know given differentiated instruction. Secondly, teachers should focus on the grouping of students. By placing students into groups in a purposeful and meaningful manner, teachers can ensure that valuable collaboration will occur. Teachers should also choose instructional materials and resources wisely. This can be accomplished by being aware that the chosen materials and resources have an impact on student learning objectives and outcomes. Lastly, teachers should pay special attention to structure and pacing in the classroom. When teaching a lesson teachers must be sure that it follows a logical and timely sequence.
Possible Artifacts
Pre-plan lessons with formative assessment already in mind
Design groups for group work prior to class so that students of different skill levels can thrive individually
