Component 2b: Establishing a Culture for Learning
What is Component 2b?
Component 2b involves establishing a culture for learning. In order to do so, both teachers and students must constantly put forth their best effort. If teachers lead the way in showing enthusiasm and hard work, students will be sure to follow in their footsteps and have a positive outlook on learning.
Why do we need to know about Component 2b?
It is important for educators to understand the component so that students are encouraged to put forth their best effort in all they do. A positive attitude will create an upbeat and enthusiastic environment in which students will produce more quality work. When students are excited about what they are learning, they will be more likely to execute projects and activities more efficiently and accurately.
Elements
The first element to understand is the importance of content and of learning. This element involves students being actively involved in learning the content. Students are engaged in lesson material and are learning new concepts each day. The second element is setting expectations for learning & achievement. It is vital that teachers establish learning expectations from the beginning of the school year so that students know that they are required to constantly put forth their best effort. Lastly, students should take pride in work. If students truly value and appreciate what they are learning, they will be confident in their execution of certain projects and presentations.
Possible Artifacts
Note the quality of projects and student activities
Note student engagement by having them take a survey in which they evaluate the effectiveness of certain activities
